Award Recipients Announced for Overall Performance and Physician of the Year, Nurse of the Year, Team of the Year, and Inaugural Pediatric Excellence Award

November 1, 2017, Orlando, FL –  Press Ganey today announced the recipients of four prestigious awards, the Physician of the Year Award, the Nurse of the Year Award, the Team of the Year Award and the Inaugural Pediatric Excellence award, at its 2017 National Client Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Press Ganey presented the Physician of the Year award to Dr. Rana Awdish, Director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program at Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Awdish was also recently named Medical Director of Care Experience for the entire health system. As a clinician, Dr. Awdish is a critical care physician. She recently published her first book, In Shock, a memoir based on her own critical illness.  Press Ganey recognized Dr. Awdish for her unwavering focus on improving empathy through connection and communication. Among her accomplishments, she established a workshop based program called CLEAR (Connect, Listen, Emphasize, Align, Respect), which trains faculty and trainees in relationship-based communication skills utilizing improvisational actors.

Press Ganey also presented its Nurse of the Year Award to Dawn Brown, clinical manager at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. The award recognizes the contributions of an outstanding direct-care nurse who has demonstrated a commitment to care innovation, transformation and collaboration to support an exceptional patient experience. Brown was honored for her leadership and active role in identifying best practices for pain management within her team and adopting those practices both within her unit and across the organization to improve overall patient experience. Runners-up for Nurse of the Year were Jennifer Dalton of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital (Texas Health Resources) and Krystal Hanrahan of Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Northwestern Medicine).

This year’s Team of the Year was awarded to the National Jewish Health Comprehensive Respiratory Care Clinic (CRCC) for their work to overcome barriers to deliver much needed respiratory care to disadvantaged populations. The CRCC provides a range of services and staff who are oriented to the needs of the homeless population, which include cultural competency, smoking cessation, as well as financial and transportation services to assist patients.

Introducing a new award this year, Press Ganey presented the Inaugural Pediatric Excellence award to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital of OHSU Healthcare. The award was created to recognize a standalone pediatric hospital, hospital within a system, or unit that has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the delivery of pediatric care. Doernbecher Children’s Hospital was selected for their Novel Interventions in Children’s Healthcare (NICH) program, which supports youth with complex medical conditions. Through its proactive outreach to patients and education of their families, the NICH pilot has decreased emergency department visits, reduced hospitalizations, and decreased hospital days and direct medical costs.

“We are honored to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of our 2017 award winners. The individuals and organizations recognized today have demonstrated extraordinary vision and commitment to improving the patient experience, reducing suffering, and enhancing caregiver resilience,” said Patrick T. Ryan, CEO, Press Ganey. “All of us at Press Ganey are continuously inspired by our clients’ achievements, and we are proud to partner with them to improve the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care.”

Press Ganey also announced the recipients of its Pinnacle of Excellence, NDNQI®Success Story, and Guardian of Excellence awards, recognizing in total over 200 organizations for their superior performance in consistently delivering exceptional patient care.

The Press Ganey National Client Conference draws nearly 3,000 health care executives, physicians, nurses, and other professionals from across the country to learn and collaboratively explore paths toward more patient-centered care.
