Award Recipients Announced for Physician of the Year, Nurse of the
Year, Team of the Year, Pediatric Excellence Award and Safety Champion

the recipients of five prestigious awards—Physician of the Year, Nurse
of the Year, Team of the Year, Pediatric Excellence Award and Safety
Champion—at its 2018 National Client Conference in Orlando, Florida.
Press Ganey presented the Physician of the Year Award to Dr. Emily
Sedgwick, Chief Quality Officer of Faculty Group Practice and Medical
Director of Breast Imaging at Baylor College of Medicine. Press Ganey
recognized Dr. Sedgwick for her compassionate commitment to the patient
experience. Through her leadership, Dr. Sedgwick created and implemented
a same-day breast biopsy program that has reduced wait times for breast
imaging and biopsies and greatly enhanced patient experience.
This year’s Nurse of the Year Award was presented to Melle Reider-Demer,
Nurse Practitioner at Ronald Reagan University Medical Center, UCLA
Health System. This award recognizes the contributions of an outstanding
direct-care nurse who has demonstrated a commitment to care innovation,
transformation and collaboration to support an exceptional patient
experience. Reider-Demer is being honored for her numerous contributions
to improving the patient experience and her commitment to continued
transformation for the betterment of patients and the organization.
Finalists for the Nurse of the Year Award are Cathy Carson of Atrium
Health and Aloha Almazan of Dignity Health.
Press Ganey’s Team of the Year Award was given to the Medical University
of South Carolina’s Blood & Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program for its
exceptional ability to treat adult and pediatric patients across
multiple entities within the university. The program’s multidisciplinary
team coordinates care across several departments and relies on
communication and collaboration to help deliver positive patient
experiences and outcomes.
The 2018 Pediatric Excellence Award was presented to Children’s Hospital
of Philadelphia (CHOP). This award recognizes a hospital or unit that
has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the delivery of pediatric
care. CHOP was selected for its continued commitment to deliver
breakthrough experiences for patients, families and staff by mobilizing
a multidisciplinary enterprise team responsible for driving
transformational change throughout the organization.
The HPI Press Ganey Kerry Johnson Safety Champion Award was presented to
Dale Harvey, Director of Performance Improvement, Quality and Safety at
Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, and Joan Wynn, Vice
President of Safety & Quality and Chief Quality Officer at Vidant
Health. The Safety Champion Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate
expertise and success on their safety and reliability journey as well as
a willingness to share that expertise with others to advance patient and
caregiver safety.
